Rachel Womack visited Coach Dave Hahn and his UW Whitewater Warhawks throwers on a rainy day practice in April, 2011. Rachel is a professional videographer and also the middle school throws coach at Slinger, WI. She created this video to help promote the throws, with the theme being "Why I throw." The Warhawks are having a great season and its really neat to hear their reasons of why they got into / love the throws.
Rachel has done some other projects with throwers as well. She recently did a piece highlighting Luke Sullivan's All-American Throws Camp. She also had a hand in getting current national D3 discus leader, Breanna Strupp, started in the discus throw as a middle school athlete.
Thanks to Rachel for giving back to the throws!

2011 DISCUS REVIEW
LUKE SULLIVAN's 2011 DISCUS REVIEW
Although the throwing season is already under way I have decided to list my criteria in the selection of a discus. The implements are made out of different materials with varying rim weights. Over the years I have thrown many discus, have discussed in detail the pros and cons of particular brands with high school, college and professional athletes, and have queried a number of coaches as to their likes and dislikes. All parties agree that the implement selected must match the throwing capability of the athlete. Listed below are some of the questions that should be posed:
(1) How far are you throwing? If you are a beginner it makes no sense to purchase a discus with a high rim weight as you will not be able to spin it.
(2) If your discus flutters, stick with the cheaper implement. A cardinal rule is that the better the thrower the more weight on the edge. The faster you can spin it the further it goes.
(3) Does the implement feel comfortable in your hand? Can you grip it without slipping? How does it feel when it is released?
(4) Cost. If a coach is working with 20 throwers it does not make fiscal sense to purchase one $500 discus and 10 cheap rubber ones. Buy a half dozen medium range implements so that everyone can get in a lot of repetitions. Unless you have an extraordinary athlete odds are your big purchase is not going to win you additional distance.
2011 Discus Review
With this in mind, let's go shopping for some discus!

Thanks LUKE! For your great article.

The WISCONSIN HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD State Honor Roll list for the throws is full of MADISON THROWS CLUB members. With indoor season behind us and outdoor just getting underway, I'm sure there will be lots of changes. ON the list or not...your goal is to throw further each week, the weeks that you don't,take away something from it and apply it at practice the next week. I look forward to seeing lots of P.R.s in the coming weeks. Congrats to everyone on your solid starts to the 2011 season, keep working hard and good luck the rest of the way!

Coach Frontier

MTC Boys DOMINATE WEST RELAYS
The 2011 edition of the Madison West Relays did not dissappoint when it came to the Shot Put competition. The meet has traditionally been a place where many of the best throwers in the state of Wisconsin see how they measure against each other as the indoor season nears its finish. With many Madison Throws Club throwers entered in the meet...the MTC boys wanted to continue the meet's tradition by showing they were ready to throw far. Madison Throws Club dominated both the Class B and Class A meets. Congratulations boys! Some good throws today and still lots of things to work on to throw farther! : (MTC throwers in RED)
