THE BEST GIRLS IN WISCONSIN PREP THROWS HISTORY
There is a rich high school Track and Field tradition in the state of Wisconsin especially in the SHOT PUT and DISCUS throwing events.
So who are the best WI prep girls throwers of all time? Only 18 girls in state history are on both the current all-time lists. Some very special performances over recent years have altered the girls history books in a big way. 15 of the 18 who made the list, competed since 2002, nearly wiping out what the history books looked like prior to 2000.
Here is how the girl throwers who appear on both the SHOT PUT top 50 list and the DISCUS top 50 list look when I gave them a ranking based on their composite shot put and discus ranking:

Don't Scratch Your First Throw
Great article from Martin Bingisser and HMMR Media analyzing first throw scratches at the 2015 World Track and Field Championships in Beijing.
Looking at all of the throwers at the 2015 World Championships in Men's and Women's Shot Put, Discus, Hammer, and Javelin 20% of their first throws were scratches. In the qualifying round, throwers who scratched had a 27.9% chance of moving on from qualifying. Athletes that had a legal first throw nearly doubled their chance to make the final at 52.4%.
In the preliminary round the numbers did not change much. 22% of throwers with a first round foul earned 3 more throws in the final. While 44% of throwers with first throw marks moved on to the top 8.
Many factors, not just pure probability of first round fouls play into making it into finals at any meet. But I do think the importance of having a mark on your first throw as meets get bigger and the competition is at its highest, can not be overlooked. Things like psychology and pressure DO factor in here as well as experience. Please read the article for more details!
One important thing to remember during your training is to not practice fouling! I see a lot throwers scratch every throw during a warm-up and then have to drastically change what they do during the competition to get a mark. Practice how you want to compete. If you scratch a lot during practice slow down, find a way to stay in the ring, then add speed back in slowly and see if you can continue to stay in the ring. When you have a legal throw on throw number 1, it can make the rest of your competition much easier to approach.
Not only can having a mark on your first attempt take a lot of pressure off of yourself it can allow you to chase big throws on your next 2 attempts. But it opens the possibility of other impacts as well. Having a mark that is a BIG throw in the first round can put pressure on your competitors. I've watched plenty of competitions where a big first round mark weighs heavily on the rest of the field. And despite there being talented throwers capable of out throwing your big mark, the psychology of them having to chase you can change their outcomes drastically.

2015 MTC Throwers WIN 5 WIAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to everyone who competed at the 2015 WIAA State Championships. 22 MTC Qualifiers - 13 of which finished in the top 8 of their throwing events. A Special Congratulations to
the 3 athletes that collected 5 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!
Chloe Eckstein, (sr.) Reedsvile - D3 Girls Discus Champion
Tucker Wedig, (sr.) Belmont - D3 Boys Discus Champion
Tucker Wedig, (sr.) Belmont - D3 Boys Shot Put Champion
Samantha Noennig, (jr.) Hartford - D1 Girls Discus Champion
Samantha Noennig, (jr.) Hartford - D1 Girls Shot Put Champion
See all 24 Madison throws Club Throwers that have won State Championships HERE.
Chloe Eckstein, (sr.) Reedsville for winning the 2015 D3 Girls WIAA State Discus Championship. Chloe finished on the podium at the 2014 State Meet. Her throw of 125'5" earned her GOLD and put her at the top of the podium in her final high school meet. Congratulations Chloe! Best of luck at Concordia University next year!
Belmont's Tucker Wedig (sr.) had a target on his back as the defending State Champion in the Shot Put and Discus. The pressure did not get to him in either event. As he stepped into the discus ring on his final throw still needing a throw to put him over the top, Tucker found what he needed - the winning throw 164'11". A day later, Tucker Completed the back to back sweep in the Shot Put by throwing 57' 00.5". Congrats Tucker, best of luck next year at the University of Wisconsin!
Sam Noennig, (jr.) Hartford, came into the 2015 State Meet as the defending champion in the Discus, however, because of the remarkable season of Josie Schaeffer, (so.) Baraboo, Noennig came in as the 2nd seed. Sam and Josie finished the preliminaries tied at 155'1". Sam wasted no time to hit a big throw, going 161'6" on her first throw in finals. 161'6" is a new P.R. for Sam and is the 6th best throw in Wisconsin Prep History. It stood up to win amongst a barrage of quality throws from Schaeffer. I'm sure the 2 will be back at it next year as well as several others from a strong field of underclassaman including Karly Murphy - River Falls, and Holly Houston - Madison Memorial.
Sam Noennig, also won the D1 Shot Put on Saturday. Besting a deep field of underclassmen who will all return. She will look to build on her State Championship throw of 44'5.5" next year.

DISCUS RIM WEIGHT
This is a fantastic article on discus rim weight and discus throwing from the THROWHOLICS.COM
I've been asked many times about what discs kids should throw and the answer is...its different for everyone! I think this explains the how and why you need to carefully consider what discus to throw. Experimenting is good!

Sam Noennig, a junior at Hartford Union High School, stretched her strong start to the 2015 high school season into the outdoor season by throwing 156'8" in her first outdoor meet of the year. Her throw ranks her 9th in WISCONSIN PREP history. She also improved her season best in the shot put to 45'11", that throw moves her to 16th all-time on the PREP shot put list.
Congrats Sam!
April 24th, 2015
Holly Houston, a junior at Madison Memorial High School, took her strong start to the season to another level by throwing 150'1" in the discus at the Watertown Invitational. This was the third consecutive meet Holly has P.R.'d. She set a P.R. of 135'1" at the second outdoor meet of the year pushing her sophomore year effort to the side by nearly 4 feet. Then went 143'1" on 4/21. Holly's 150'1"came on her third throw and was thrown in a rainy tailwind. Her throw is the 15th best throw All-time in WISCONSIN PREP history.

MTC start the High School season with BIG THROWS
A huge thank you to the numerous athletes that committed to working hard this off-season and allowing Madison Throws Club to guide their training in the circle this past summer, fall, and winter.
Now it is time to compete. The 2015 Wisconsin high school season has begun and its a 12 week journey of adjustments and continued growth with your high school coaches. Best of luck to everyone, keep me posted on P.R.s!
Some throwers wasted no time to allow their hard work to shine through. 2 junior girls started the season with BIG THROWS. Harford's Samantha Noennig and Ashwaubenon's Kristine Lindow both have set new P.R.'s at early indoor meets. On Saturday, March 21, Noennig threw 45'4" at the Invite held at Carthage college. Her throw is the 24th best in Wisconsin prep history. Lindow wasted no time going 42'11" for a new P.R. in the shot put a few days later.
The Sam and Kris rank 1st and 2nd in the state. Karen Wethal and Holly Houston out to strong starts as well, both with early season P.R.'s. Keep track of the Girls STATE HONOR ROLL at Dave Figi's fantastic site covering Wisconsin Prep Girls Track and Field! www.wisconsintrackonline.com

MTC ALUMNI THROWERS excel at UW vs. MINN DUAL MEET
|
Kiley Sabin, Kailee Kamps, Coach Frontier, KeKe Burks, Angela Boushea |
The first dual meet between the UW Badgers and Minnesota Gophers in 37 years provided a great opportunity for MTC Alumni throwers to hit some new lifetime bests early in the NCAA indoor season.
Kiley Sabin who is in her redshirt season in her first year at Minnesota p.r.'d in the exhibition discus event 46.39m (152'1"). KeKeBurks, jr, Minnesota, also p.r.'d in the discus with a throw of 50.04m (164'1"). Angela Boushea, sr. Wisconsin, p.r.'d in the weight throw 20.06m (65'9.5') which is the 3rd best throw in the Big Ten this season and the 17th best throw in the country so far this season.
Kailee Kamps, so. Minnesota, p.r.'d in the shot put 15.03m (49'3.5"), an amazing throw after a lengthy rehab from a elbow injury.
It was awesome to see the girls compete at such a high level! Best of luck and continued success this season.

WIAA Boys State Discus Record - Luke Sullivan 193'3"
Luke Sullivan's record 193'3" discus throw at the 1993 WIAA STATE Track and Field Championships has stood the test of time. Its one of the oldest records in the books. State records can only be set at the WIAA state meet. Luke was a junior at Verona High School and despite winning his third state championship his senior year he couldn't top his own mark on the day of the meet, despite throwing 198'11" that season. We've seen a lot of good discus throwers since 1993, but none have been able to produce the magic Luke created in 1993. If records are made to be broken, it will take someone with a lot of hard-work, determination, great technique, and most importantly the guts to not succumb to the pressure state meet can produce.
Until then, keep watching this video and stay hungry.
